- Director of Patient Financial Services
Description
Cass Health is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as our Director of Patient Financial Services. This is an opportunity to join an award-winning revenue cycle team and lead key back-end revenue cycle operations within one of Iowa's highest-performing Critical Access Hospitals.
The Director of Patient Financial Services provides leadership for billing, accounts receivable, payer follow-up, payment posting, self-pay operations, and patient financial services. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely reimbursement, optimizing financial performance, and supporting an exceptional patient financial experience.
Working closely with Revenue Integrity, Patient Access, Finance, and executive leadership, the Director will drive performance improvement initiatives, leverage data to identify opportunities, and foster a culture of accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Revenue Cycle Leadership
- Lead billing, claims management, accounts receivable, payment posting, payer follow-up, and patient financial services operations.
- Ensure timely and accurate claim submission, denial resolution, and reimbursement optimization.
- Monitor and improve key performance indicators including net days in AR, denial rates, clean claim rates, cash collections, and self-pay performance.
- Identify trends and implement operational improvements that enhance revenue cycle effectiveness and financial outcomes.
- Partner with Revenue Integrity and Patient Access leaders to reduce preventable denials and improve first-pass yield.
Financial Performance & Operations
- Oversee payer follow-up processes and resolution of reimbursement issues.
- Ensure accurate payment posting, contractual adjustments, reconciliation activities, and audit readiness.
- Collaborate with Finance and Accounting on cash reconciliation and month-end processes.
- Utilize reporting and analytics to drive informed decision-making and operational improvements.
Patient Financial Services & Self-Pay Operations
- Lead patient balance management, including statements, payment plans, financial assistance, refunds, and collection activities.
- Develop and optimize strategies for self-pay AR, patient responsibility, and collection performance.
- Monitor collection metrics, aging trends, recovery rates, and vendor performance.
- Promote a patient-centered financial experience through clear communication, transparency, and compassionate service.
- Ensure compliance with financial assistance policies, the No Surprises Act, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
Team Leadership
- Develop, coach, and support a high-performing team focused on accountability, service, and continuous improvement.
- Foster collaboration across revenue cycle departments and organizational stakeholders.
- Build a culture that balances strong financial stewardship with exceptional patient service.

Requirements
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Finance, or a related field; equivalent leadership experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with responsibility for operational performance, team development, and process improvement.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex healthcare environment.
- CRCR certification within one year of employment.
Preferred
- Experience in healthcare revenue cycle operations, including billing, claims management, accounts receivable, payer follow-up, or patient financial services.
- Experience in a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), Rural Health Clinic (RHC), or rural healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of reimbursement methodologies, revenue cycle best practices, and healthcare regulatory requirements.
- Working knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10, and medical terminology.
