Established in 1974 as a community-based medical school with an emphasis on the education of primary care and other specialists needed in South Carolina, the USC School of Medicine (SOM) has modern, state-of-the-art educational, research, and clinical facilities and a rapidly expanding clinical faculty practice plan. The SOM has fully accredited Masters, M.D., and Ph.D. programs; and, through an affiliation agreement, SOM faculty teach Palmetto Health residents and fellows. Educational, clinical, and research collaboration also exists with the Greenville Hospital System, Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center, and the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. The University of South Carolina is located in the capital city of Columbia in the center of the state. Population within the greater metropolitan area is about one million people. For college sports enthusiasts, the University offers football, basketball, baseball, and other sports within the Southeastern Conference. Columbia is home to the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens, which is ranked in the top zoos in the U.S. Day trips to the mountains or the beaches are also within an easy drive from Columbia.
